However, since they involve the latest technologies, smart door locks are not that easy to install and might require some expert help. Usually, these units come with installation instructions but if yours doesn’t have some, this article will come in handy.
Let’s get started
This installation guide is suitable for a smart door lock with a single universal mounting plate and takes around 15 minutes to complete. Some details might vary from model to model so if you experience any difficulties, contact the manufacturer and ask for assistance in installing your smart door lock model. Before you start, you must have a screwdriver within reach and check out what’s in the box. Your smart door lock should include the lock, adhesive strips, 3 adapters, and one universal mounting plate. Once you have these, you can start the installation process.
Remove the thumb-latch
Put the adhesive tape over the keyhole to hold it in place when you will remove the thumb-latch on the inside of the door. You do this by unscrewing the existing screws on the deadbolt then you unlock the deadbolt and remove the thumb-latch. If your thumb-latch includes another plate at the back, remove it and keep it along with the long screws for the next step.
Position the mounting plate
Next, take the mounting plate and adjust the screw-holes as needed so it will fit the position of your thumb-latch. Place the mounting plate with the rubber bumpers facing the door and use the thumb-latch screws to tighten it into place. Don’t screw it too tightly because it could be deformed.
Place the adapter on the tailpiece
Depending on the tailpiece of the deadbolt on your door, you must choose the adapter that fits it and place it on the tailpiece with the small nub pointing up. The adapter will hold the smart door lock into place.
Attach the smart door lock
Once everything is in place, put the smart door lock over the mounting plate as close to the door as possible so it will perfectly fit on the door. Some smart door locks have two side clamps that must be pulled up then down in order to place the door lock correctly on the door.
Complete the setup
After the smart door lock has been positioned on the door, remove the battery tab and use your smartphone app to perform the setup and have the smart door lock working. This can be easily done by following the steps shown by the app.
